Found on the Folly - Interesting Jeppe History - Mysterious object, help me find out what it is?

Interesting object found on the Folly.  It is attracted by a magnet and very rusted.  Measures 10.5 cm x 6 cm.

I am stumped!  It reminds me of a winding key for an old clock.  In this case a gigantic clock ... or the little gadget used to open a sardine tin .......... a giant sized one!!

Any ideas?  Please help me identify the object?

Interesting Jeppe history - Mystery of another wall!

I am currently doing research to find out about the retaining wall that supports the top field that runs alongside the Memorial Hall and the Innovation Hub. There is a story told that it is the longest dry- stacked wall ........ built by Italian Prisoners of War.
Initially I was focusing on this wall .....

...... until I came across this photo of a hurdler. Look behind his bicycle. There is another wall running at an angle going the other way. Right where the Memorial Hall is built now. I wonder if they just covered it up or did they remove it. Is it still there?
How many other walls are hiding in the Jeppe Landscape. We need LIDAR!!

Interesting Jeppe History - Payne Hall - Polishing of the Corona

Forti nihil difficilius

They are the crowning glory of the Payne Hall, have you ever taken the time to have a closer look.  They give the Hall that "Harry Potter" feel.

This year will be my 20th at the school. In my time here, they have never looked this good.  Last Friday they were painstakingly removed by very brave men who defied gravity.  My heart skipped a beat.  They were given a good clean and a polish.  This morning when I came in to work they had been re-wired and hung.  They look brand spanking new!

Brave men removing the tarnished chandeliers

Chandeliers, Payne Hall, Jeppe High School for Boys

Naturally (natural for me😊), I had to find out a bit more about them:

Synonym for Chandelier  = Corona ......... How interesting!

How Many?

There are three of these chandeliers suspended from the ceiling in the Payne Hall.

What are they made of?

I think that they are Bronze

What kind of Candelier?

Bronze, 8 arm Flemish/Dutch Ball Chandelier (I think)

Circa?

Not sure, maybe early 1800's to early/mid 1900's

Below please see snippets of  examples I found online

Another Mystery Solved, maybe?

Whilst investigating chandeliers I might've eventually identified a mystery object that I found on the Folly last year.

I initially thought that this was some kind of draw, door or gate pull ... or could it be the bottom part of a chandelier?

Interesting Jeppe History - Sir Julius Jeppe the Big Game Hunter

Have you ever wondered why the Hostel and Day Boy Houses at Jeppe High School for Boys are named after Buck

DUIKER, ELAND, IMPALA, KOODOO, ORIBI, ROAN, SABLE, TSESSEBE!

Sir Julius Jeppe was a big game hunter.  He used to take shooting and fishing parties over from Johannesburg to Pretoria on weekends.

The Pretoria Country Club club was founded in 1910.  Where the opulent clubhouse now stands, Sir Julius Jeppe had a somewhat more modest hunting lodge.

For his pioneering role in the development of Johannesburg he was knighted in 1922.

He envisaged a club with a lake, tennis courts, croquet lawns, an 18-hole golf course.  It was one of the first places where golf could be played.
.

In a book by Jane Carruthers, "The Kruger National Park a Social and Political History",  I found this photograph of Sir Julius Jeppe, Jan Smuts and John Rissik.

I found a free e-book called Records of Big Game by Roland Ward (published 1899).

Sir Julius Jeppe held so many records.  I started pasting them all ( there were too many).  I will paste the link below and you can read the entire book.  It's very interesting!  I also found a Major Rattray and a Mr Jackson ............ 😁

Found on the Folly - Interesting Jeppe History - Can Glass be wired?

Yes, it can !!😁 I found this interesting glass shard on the Folly.

Piece of Georgian Wired Glass.  The wire mesh is actually embedded.

Initially I thought that this glass shard (with a square pattern) was a broken piece from a vintage fridge rack.

It is actually wired glass (safety glass).

Wired glass (sometimes referred to as Georgian wired glass or GW glass) was patented by Frank Shuman in 1892.  Wired glass typically has a grid size of around 12.5mm and is used as a low-cost fire resistant glass in which the wire holds the glass in place if high temperature causes it to break.

An example of wired glass

Frank Suman also built the world's first solar thermal power station in Egypt

Ironically they called it safety glass, it is actually very dangerous and the use banned in some countries

Dangers of Safety Glass

"American television broadcast company CBS reported on the dangers of wired glass during an evening news show, mentioning an aspiring basketball player who, after attempting to block a shot, ran straight into a wired glass window and put his hand through it. His injuries subsequently ended his basketball career as he lost the full use of his hand."

I'm not sure where this glass was used at Jeppe Boys in the past.  Luckily I haven't seen it anywhere else on the property.

Click on the links below to read more about the history of wired glass and the dangers.

Interesting Jeppe History - Old Blazer

On Monday this amazing blazer was donated to the School.

\

Awarded to Brian van der Bijl over 50 year's ago

I still need to do some research to find out what kind of blazer it is as criteria for awarding blazers have changed over the years

The Scrolls are for "Hockey 1970" and "Hockey 1971"

At first glance you might think that the gold on the badge and scrolls is "thread" but it is actually embroidered golden wire

Interesting Jeppe History - A Historical Meeting in an Unlikely Place

The Treaty to end the Second Anglo Boer War was officially signed at Melrose House, Pretoria on 31 May 1902.  It was called the Treaty of Vereeniging (commonly referred to as the "Peace of Vereeniging".

It is believed that the initial talks that led to the Treaty of Vereeniging were held at the Friedenheim  homestead, not at the home of Sir Julius Jeppe (Friedenheim) but in the 'summerhouse'.

You won't believe this, the building still exists.  You have most probably walked past it a million times.

Below is a pic of the  'summerhouse', Friedenheim homestead, Jeppe High School for Boys

I found the info for this post in the Publication:

Jeppe Schools & Quondam History 1890 - 2015

(The information about the Treaty of Vereeniging was from the National Archives, UK)

Remember this photo of the Friedenheim homestead?

Could the little house on the hill (right side of photo) be the  "summerhouse"?

The summerhouse is actually at the bottom left of the page, behind a little tree (thanks Mr Brodrick)

I wonder what the little house on the hill was?

Photo's taken inside the summerhouse

I strolled pas the summerhouse 2 days ago, it was open and I snapped the following photo's
of the ceiling and the antique light fitting

I found this old photograph of the summerhouse in the archive.  I don't know when the photo was taken but the yellow registration plate of the car (circa 1975 - 1994)

Remembering Jeppe Legends - Norman Gordon (August 6, 1911 - September 2, 2014)

Worlds Oldest Test Cricketer - 103 years

Born on 6 August 1911 in Boksburg

Matriculated - Jeppe Boys in 1929

Died 2 September 2014 in Hillbrow

Nickname "Mobil" - He used Vaseline to slick down his hair

(Might be why we are finding so many vintage Vaseline jars on the Folly and next to the Field)

He loved cricket so much, he repeated Matric to play some more!

Have you noticed this painting hanging on the wall next to

Ms de Wet's classroom door?

Interesting Jeppe History - Old Photograph - Tram Lines

This photo was sent to me by my cousin Clare MacDonald -  Thanks Clare!

This is when the tram lines were put into Kensington.  Photo taken from near Cole Street, Robert's Avenue.  Scottish Horse Memorial on the right.  Jeppe Boys would also be built on the right.  Clare is not sure when the photo was taken.  It must be pre-1909 because Jeppe Boys was built in 1909.

Films or parts of films shot at Jeppe High School for Boys

I decided that it would be awesome to document all the movies that have been filmed at Jeppe Boys.

I'm sure there have been more, but here are some of the movies and series that I have found.

Let me know if you know of more.

I found this series, filmed in 1982.  I loved this, it shows how the school looked 40 years ago!
