Forged from the Folly - Do you know what a vulcanite stopper is? No, not an army protecting Mr Spock's home planet!

I also didn't know until I found these,

Vulcanite bottle stopper from Stag Beer Bottle
found on the road (Hockey Astro parking area)

Stopper top left, from a SAB Beer Bottle, found
on the bank behind the hockey supporter seating

Vulcanite Bottle Stoppers

The stoppers are made by heating India rubber to 115 degrees together with linseed and sulphur.
This creates a strong and durable material.  The process is called "vulcanization".

I created this piece of ShardArt for Dave when he left Jeppe.

Forged from the Folly - ShardArt - "The BallGown"

Depression Glass

I have found many shards of depression glass on the Folly.  They date mostly from 1929 to 1939, from the Depression Era.  This type of glass was very cheap to make because it was moulded.  It was made in interesting colours and patterns.  It was cheap to buy, sometimes the items were given away for free.  It was produced in America and Canada.

How to spot Depression Glass? Air bubbles in glass and visible seams.  If you check out the ShardArt above, you will be able to see both.

Forged from the Folly - ShardArt "Ibutho-Warrior"

This is what you get when you glue together a fossilised twisted tube of Brylcream (Circa 1900's) a Champion sparkplug from Canada H-10 (Circa 1950)  and a metal tube that housed a glass insulin vial from Copenhagen (Circa 1923) - (oh and a knife - Circa unknown, modern), most probably from Sable Hostel, sorry Mr Hillock)

A WARRIOR!!

Forged from the Folly - ShardArt - My first ShardArt from the Folly - To Mrs Lilley

I started collecting old porcelain shards and other interesting objects on the Folly, they fascinated me.  So many colours and designs!  I created this mosaic frame for Mrs Lilley, as you all know she loves tea.

Can you spot the big 4 (2 ellies, 1 siamese and an insect (the body of the cat is made with a Noritake porcelain shard)

The Key Master

I made this for Mr Ledwaba as a retirement gift.  I tried to depict him using only 3 shards.  Some of the keys are from his private collection.  Over the span of his 50 years at Jeppe Boys he has collected a vast array of keys left behind after Jeppe functions.  He might just have a key to open any house or start every car in Johannesburg! (the persons who attempted to burgle my house last month, please ignore this post)

"The Key Master", my gift to Mr Martin Ledwaba when he retired 2021
