I found this old photograph on Pinterest.  I have no idea when it was taken.  Could this be Tsessebe boys in the Friedenheim dining room?

Interesting Jeppe History - A Historical Meeting in an Unlikely Place

The Treaty to end the Second Anglo Boer War was officially signed at Melrose House, Pretoria on 31 May 1902.  It was called the Treaty of Vereeniging (commonly referred to as the "Peace of Vereeniging".

It is believed that the initial talks that led to the Treaty of Vereeniging were held at the Friedenheim  homestead, not at the home of Sir Julius Jeppe (Friedenheim) but in the 'summerhouse'.

You won't believe this, the building still exists.  You have most probably walked past it a million times.

Remember this photo of the Friedenheim homestead?

Could the little house on the hill (right side of photo) be the  "summerhouse"?

The summerhouse is actually at the bottom left of the page, behind a little tree (thanks Mr Brodrick)

I wonder what the little house on the hill was?

I strolled pas the summerhouse 2 days ago, it was open and I snapped the following photo's

of the ceiling and the antique light fitting

I found this old photograph of the summerhouse in the archive.  I don't know when the photo was taken but the yellow registration plate of the car (circa 1975 - 1994)

Matriculated - Jeppe Boys in 1929

Died 2 September 2014 in Hillbrow

Nickname "Mobil" - He used Vaseline to slick down his hair

(Might be why we are finding so many vintage Vaseline jars on the Folly and next to the Field)

He loved cricket so much, he repeated Matric to play some more!

Found under the Field - Bottle, Jar and Lid

 Frank and Emmanuelle saved these little gems for me.  Found under the stands on White Field.

A beautiful cut glass perfume bottle (I think), Vicks Vaporub and a lovely teapot lid

The only item I was able to date is the Vaporub from the 1950's

"Pharmacist Lunsford Richardson made Vicks a household name.

He is from North Carolina (USA). Richardson’s salve, Vicks VapoRub, helped the world breathe easier during the devastating influenza pandemic of 1918.

Why didn’t Richardson — by all accounts a creative inventor and smart businessman — ever become as famous as those vapors packed into the familiar squat blue jar?

Because his name wouldn’t fit on the jar.

That’s one version of the story. According to company and family lore, Richardson initially dubbed his promising new product Richardson’s Croup and Pneumonia Cure Salve. Realizing that this name didn’t exactly roll off the tongue nor fit when printed on a small medicine jar, Richardson changed the name to honor his brother-in-law, Dr. Joshua Vick. Another account suggests the inventive druggist plucked the name from a seed catalog he’d been perusing that listed the Vick Seed Co.

The truth may never be known. What is known, though, is that Lunsford Richardson created a medicinal marvel for the ages, the likes of which may never be equaled."
